The Exhibition

Ted Scott has spent the better part of seventy years photographing the world and then cutting it apart. The camera work begins in post-war Britain — bomb sites, street markets, factory gates, a pier at Worthing.

The collages are built from the same material. A GI's jacket is cut from Vietnam reportage; a warrior's shield is filled with the record of the battles he fights. Each figure stands on a flat, unbroken ground of red or blue — the colour of a printed page rather than of any landscape.

About the Artist

Ted Scott was born in England in 1941 and apprenticed as a printer in London. He had no camera until he was sixteen, when he foiled a burglary at the shop next to where he lived and the grateful owner gave him a German camera by way of reward. Cartier-Bresson did the rest.

He photographed London and the south coast through the fifties and sixties, and was commissioned to photograph Prince Charles at polo at Windsor — the picture chosen was given to him for his twenty-first birthday.

He came to New Zealand for the printing trade, was made redundant after the crash, won an art award and spent it starting a photography business. He has lived on Auckland's west coast since 1981, and from Karekare has made a shelf of bestselling New Zealand books, several of them with Bob Harvey.
